Plant Bio
The Strelitzia nicolai, often called the Giant White Bird of Paradise, brings instant tropical vibes with its large, dramatic, banana-like leaves and statuesque presence. A favourite in modern interiors and urban jungles, this plant adds vertical elegance and a lush, architectural feel to any space. Native to South Africa, it can grow impressively tall indoors—up to 2 meters or more—making it a perfect statement piece.
Though it's named after the exotic bird of paradise flower, indoor Strelitzias rarely bloom, but their sculptural foliage more than makes up for it. With the right care, this plant becomes a long-lasting, rewarding addition to your collection.
Plant Care
Water
Water once a week or when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. In warmer months, it may require more frequent watering to support its large leaves. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf edges to brown or curl. Reduce watering frequency in winter.
Sunlight
Loves bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun, especially in the morning. Ideally, give it 6 to 8 hours of bright light per day. If the leaves appear to stretch or the plant becomes leggy, it likely needs more light.
Ambient
Thrives in warm, humid environments with temperatures between 18°C - 27°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C. Humidity boosts leaf health—mist weekly or place near a humidifier, especially during dry seasons.
Nutrients
Feed every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced liquid fertilizer or Indoor Plant Food. Hold off feeding in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows down.
